German reformer Martin Luther once said, "To be a Christian without prayer is no more possible than to be alive without breathing." Jesus himself held prayer as a vital, daily part of his relationship with the Father, both privately and with his disciples. No wonder, then, the disciples come to him and ask him to teach them to pray as he did.
Jesus gladly obliged, and gifted them--and us--with not only an example of what to pray, but a prayer from his own heart that would bless through the centuries.
This morning we will look at the prayer and Jesus' expectation that it would become a part of the life of the church forever, how Jesus reveals the character of God through the prayer, and a promise of prayer that brings hope in our time.
