Description

Avenue Red is proud to present a mix by an underground mixtape machine known as Tom Larson (real name Tommy Köhler), who hails from the famous East German "toy town", Sonneberg. If you scroll down on his Soundcloud page (link below), you will see that he has already paid a visit to literally all of the other contemporary underground house/techno/dub techno podcasts with one of his tightly mixed, thoughtfully compiled selections of all things deep, groovy and spaced-out.

This new one for Avenue Red grabs your attention right from the start. Crisp, fresh bongo beats laced with moody, smokey film noir piano atmospheres set the stage, then proceeding directly onwards into devilish, dubbed-out minimal techno and deep house, then drifting into something lighter and more uplifting... and back again. Tommy shows his sophistication and experience as a DJ with the continuous shifts in mood between clusters of tracks, which gives a feeling that you are always heading into some new territory, but never knowing how this journey will proceed or end.

"It's difficult to find some words about me. I'm just a home-based DJ who made many mixes for various podcasts. It's just a hobby. I love music, I love finding interesting artists & labels. My influences are coming from Detroit and Chicago, but I think my sound is always "Deep". Deep is a feeling, a state of mind, so the range of music that I would play is wide, but it's got to have that deep feeling!

I've been mixing since 2001 (20 Years), where I started simply with 2 turntables and a mixer and later I progressed to digital DJ'ing. I'm interested in producing my own music but for now that is merely a dream. It seems too difficult and hard to reach because I just don't have the necessary knowledge and maybe the input from an artist. That's why I keep focusing on mixing.

Of course, as a DJ you want bookings, but if you don't have the right connections you're lost in the large DJ pool. I don't want to get lost in that race, I am here just for the enjoyment of the music and to push out the amazing things that I constantly discover for others to enjoy too." Tommy Köhler, June 2021
