Today on our weekly roundtable: we we remember and honor civil rights visionary Julian Bond who passed away on Saturday, August 15th at age 75. Dr. Bond was a renowned social activist, leader in the American civil rights movement, politician, professor, and writer.

Bond was one of the key founders of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), one of the most pivotal organizations of the Civil Rights Movement and a clear voice in the anti-war movement. SNCC was formed in 1960.

He chaired both the Southern Poverty Law Center and the NAACP and founded the Institute for Southern Studies in 1970. He championed LGBTQ rights such as marriage equality, environmental activism, and today’s Black Lives Matter movement.

After a long, vibrant life, Bond passed away in Fort Walton Beach, Fla. His family has received a tremendous amount of support from all over the world and will honor Bond’s burial wishes by burying him at sea in the Gulf of Mexico.
