Today on Sojourner Truth:
As the death toll continues to rise in fires that have burned in huge swaths of Australia, we have the sad news that three U.S. firefighters were killed in Australia when their aerial water tanker crashed while battling fires in mountainous terrain. That brings the death toll to 30, and over a billion animals have been burned. What can be done? For Part 1 of our Earth Watch special on Australia, our guest is Cam Walker. He is the campaigns coordinator for Friends of the Earth in Australia, working across its campaigns, from climate and energy justice to forests to inland rivers. He is also a volunteer firefighter with the Country Fire Authority. Cam lives in Central Victoria, about 100 miles north of Melbourne.
Controversy has broken out between the Women's March Foundation Los Angeles and Black Lives Matter. Our guests are Dr. Melina Abdullah, who is with Black Lives Matter Los Angeles, and Gina Belafonte of Sankofa.org, a social justice organization that enlists the support of today's artists and influential individuals in collaboration with grassroots partners.
Finally, an update on Day 2 of the impeachment trial of Donald Trump. Our guest is Marjorie Cohn, professor emerita at Thomas Jefferson School of Law where she taught for 25 years. She is the former president of the National Lawyers Guild, a criminal defense attorney, a legal scholar and political analyst who writes books and articles, and lectures throughout the world about human rights, U.S. foreign policy, and the contradiction between the two.
