Today on Sojourner Truth:

In 2001, the Aristide Foundation for Democracy in Haiti broke ground on the construction of a medical school. The University of the Aristide Foundation, known as UNIFA, has now expanded to include not only a medical school, but schools of law, nursing, dentistry, physical therapy and more. The UNIFA campus was shut down and used as a military base by the United States following the 2004 U.S.-backed coup in Haiti. President Aristide and his family remained in exile for seven years, during which time the Haitian grassroots and their international supporters pressed for their return to Haiti. Upon his return, President Aristide said his focus would be education; and he was true to his word. Months after his return, the UNIFA campus reopened.

Today on Sojourner Truth, you will hear audio from a recent webinar titled Haiti's Campaign for Dignity. The virtual event features Haiti's former First Lady Mildred Aristide, actor and activist Danny Glover, Congresswoman Maxine Waters of California, Ira Kurzban (an attorney who has worked for decades in support of the Haitian struggle for democracy) and Dr. Henri Ford of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.
