In The Beginning Was the Word. John's gospel starts with the universal time frame and contextualises the birth of Jesus within the big picture. Many different words have been translated from 'Logos' - 'Word' being the most common for this passage, but Martyn picks up on another meaning - 'rumour' which is just as accurate a place to begin and invites us into God's ancient and ongoing conversation.
