Shazam Commentary
A commentary to Shazam! features as the content for this Dark Corner Podcast episode. That is, we mainly talk over this DC superhero film. However, we go off on tangents from time to time. Finally, we end with a special Dark Track.
The Commentary
Without much to discuss this episode, instead, we comment on one of Brandi’s favorite films. We talk over, Shazam! For instance, Brandi points out variations from the comic. For example, tigers appear at several points in the film. Did you know that a tiger features prominently in Shazam’s story?
Also, Dave pays respect to the art direction. For instance, he points out how spaces appear lived in. Spaces provide a sense of warmth or activity. Boxes of files sit in a social worker’s office and cheap art decorates a foster home.
Furthermore, we talk about the script. For one thing, the film is really funny. Many of the jokes land. Also, some jokes we pick up for the first time. We point out dramatic elements as well. For instance, we comment on the motif of family. Additionally, we notice how the film comes full circle at a winter festival.
We address the actors, too. Mainly, we point out how well both adult and child actors embody the characters. Furthermore, we point out subtleties in performance such as faces acting. Moreover, we interrogate the body swapping genre. For instance, we compare this to Big and Freaky Friday.
The Dark Track
Dave contacts Brian Graupner of The Gothsicles to ask if we can play Who Wants To Join Our Superhero Team? (Right Now, It’s Just Me & Jim). Thankfully, he said yes. This humorous slice of electro-industrial rock tickles the funny bone. Moreover, it originally appeared on Electronic Saviors, a compilation released by Metropolis records to support cancer research.
