WGD started when BBC Radio 6th on the 22nd of May chose to play gothic rock music. That is, they played a genre for each day. However, May 22nd showcased gothic rock. Consequently, goths in the United Kingdom caught on and made an event of it. For instance, DJ Martin OldGoth and DJ Cruel Britannia (now Batboy Slim) organized goths in the area.







What is Goth?







Originally, goths were a couple of barbarian tribes in Germany. However, thee crudeness of their culture was applied to the description of gothic architecture. The spires and buttresses appeared crude to the classical eye. However, those gothic cathedrals later inspired the gothic literature of the Romantic period. Also, these novels later became films. Gothic rock embraced the themes of these films and novels. Therefore, goth refers to all that is dark, dreary, or desolate.
