Our world is full of experts. You do not have to go any further than social media to find people who hold themselves out as experts in politics, medicine, or social issues. Whether they actually know anything is a matter of opinion. Men are famous for not asking for navigation direction or reading the assembly instructions for their new gas grill. Again, the actual level of knowledge is up for discussion. We may not always know what we are doing, but there is One who does know what He is doing. Sometimes we acknowledge this with the phrase “God only knows.…” The truth is that He does know how long this will last. He does know how badly we need a break. God does know the reasons for everything that happens. God knows every prayer, every tear, and every desperate plea. If we need electrical repairs at our house, we would not call a plumber. We must go to God to handle the things that only He can handle. Too often, we seek out people who do not know for advice and direction.
In our text, Jesus went up into the mountain. The crowd grew larger. Jesus takes note of this and askes Phillip, “where will we buy bread to feed them?” Phillip was no doubt, confused. He begins to think about how much will it cost and where he could buy that much bread. Jesus did not ask this question to frustrate Phillip, but to prove him. The bible says that Jesus already knew what He was going to do. How will we, as the church, respond when the crowds begin to come? What will we do when Jesus looks at us and asks how to feed His flock? As with Philip, Jesus already knows what He is going to do. Philip did not have to buy bread; there was a boy there already with enough bread for the Lord to use to bless the multitude.
In Ezekiel, God leads the prophet into the desert to look over dry bones and asks, “Can these bones live” Ezekiel did not seek out wise counsel; he did not try to analyze the situation. He simply said, “Lord, you know.” When we face a situation where we do not know what to do, we must respond the same way.
It is easy to question God in situations in our lives because we do not understand, but God understands and has it in control. He knows what he is doing.
