The prophet Samuel received instructions from God to go and anoint the new king from the family of Jesse. As you recall as he met each of Jesse's sons he received an impression from God that none of these young men will be the future king. He then inquires of Jesse if he has any more sons and Jesse replies in almost in afterthought, that these is another tending the sheep. As soon as Samuel sees David he knows from the Lord that David is the one!
