A revolution (from the Latin revolutio, "a turn around") is a fundamental change in power or organizational structures that takes place in a relatively short period of time. Most revolutions have a conspicuous symbol or event that becomes associated with the movement and serves to motive and mobilize the people. One such symbol is the Liberty Bell. A popular encyclopedia said the following:
“The Liberty Bell, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is a bell that has served as one of the most prominent symbols of the American Revolutionary War. It is a familiar symbol of independence within the United States and has been described as an icon of liberty and justice.” Similarly, the French Revolution had as its symbol the Storming of the Bastille. The Bolshevik Revolution the Bloody Sunday. Each of these historical events were memorialized in iconographic paintings, drawings, and engravings. Additionally, literature commemorating the events served to cement there indelible association with the larger movement, theme, and Revolution.
This morning we will be considering the Biblical accounts of revolution and their corresponding symbols. Our hope is that you will be inspired to action that changes the world!
