10-07-18 - Kill The Spider - Lust - Herbert Cooper

Matthew 5:27-28 “You have heard the commandment that says, ‘You must not commit adultery.’ 28 but I say, anyone who even looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart.” (NLT)

3 Stages Of Lust

1. Interest

2 Samuel 11:2-3 One evening David got up from his bed and walked around on the roof of the palace. From the roof he saw a woman bathing. The woman was very beautiful,3 and David sent someone to find out about her. The man said, “She is Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam and the wife of Uriah the Hittite.” (NIV)

2. Indulgence

2 Samuel 11:4 Then David sent messengers to get her. She came to him, and he slept with her...Then she went back home. (NIV)

3. Infection

2 Samuel 11:5 The woman conceived and sent word to David, saying, “I am pregnant.” (NIV)

James 1:14-15 but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed.  15 Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death. (NIV)

How to Kill The Spider of Lust

1. Choose love over lust

1 John 5:2–3 This is how we know that we love the children of God: by loving God and carrying out his commands. 3 In fact, this is love for God: to keep his commands. And his commands are not burdensome, (NIV)

Psalm 51:1–2 1 Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions. 2 Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin. (NIV)

Psalm 51:10–12 Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. 11 Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. 12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me. (NIV)

2. Have a plan for pressure (A.C.T.)

1. Admit your struggle

James 5:16 Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results. (NLT)

2. Cut off access

1 Corinthians 6:18 Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body. (NIV)

a. Run Away

b. Keep Away

1 Thessalonians 4:3-5 God’s will is for you to be holy, so stay away from all sexual sin. 4 Then each of you will control his own body and live in holiness and honor— 5 not in lustful passion like the pagans who do not know God and his ways. (NLT)

3. Trust God’s plan for purity
