This week’s guest is renowned author, broadcaster and academic David Goldblatt.
David has written one of the most authoritative books on football, The Ball is Round, and has this year published a follow-up called The Age of Football.
We talk about what it is like to write a book of such enormous heft and research - its endnotes fill more pages than most football books do by themselves - and also recount some of his favourite encounters with football’s terrible men, which include an hours-long meeting with Victor Orban and delivering a speech about Fifa in front of which Sepp Blatter literally fell asleep during the bit about corruption.
David’s picks are: The opening chapter of Don DeLillo’s novel Underworld; Only A Game? By Eamon Dunphy; When Saturday Comes; and The Damned United by David Peace.
