Description

This week’s guest is Howard Bryant, senior writer at ESPN. Howard was the editor of the Best American Sportswriting anthology in 2017, and has written nine books, including The Heritage: Black Athletes, A Divided America and the Politics of Patriotism and, most recently, Full Dissidence: Notes From an Uneven Playing Field.

He is an outstanding writer on racial issues in America, and we explore the problems and the divides that have led the country to the point at which it stands today and how they have played themselves out in sport and in sportswriting.

Howard talks about the reality of being black in America and the challenges of writing about it, how the militarisation of the police was normalised by a deceptive and secret deal with the nation’s major sports, how Colin Kapernick was right all along and why the NFL’s apology didn’t go nearly far enough.
