(Extra)ordinary | Abraham and Sarah

July 24, 2016 / Brian Alton

In our everyday lives we come to expect certain outcomes, which are like promises. If I go to school I will get a good job. If I work hard, I will get paid more and more. If I get married, I will have children. But each one of us has real examples of how life didn’t turn out the way we expected it to. When we read stories in the Bible like Abraham and Sarah, we have a tendency to think, that if we just figure out how to obey God perfectly, he will give us what we want.  When those promises (really, our expectations) aren’t fulfilled, our hearts cause us to act out in sinful ways. This week, we will examine our hearts through the story of Abraham and Sarah and see how we can’t actually bargain with God and that ultimately our trust needs to be in Jesus and his real promises.
