Today I had a very endearing call by 8 year old Anjaney. Anjaney shared with me that he is in second grade and that his parents come to America from India. His favorite hobby is soccer and his favorite soccer players are Renaldo and Messi which he aspires to be like when he grows up. When I asked Anjaney what his fears are he said that he did not have any fears. The thing that is so special about talking with kids of Anjaney's age is how purely honest and authentic they are. It reminds me how when we are children the entire world is an open opportunity and possibility. As we get older we impose on ourselves learned self doubt and limiting beliefs. When you talk with a kid like Anjaney he reminds us to be brave because its the best way to be in the world. Chasing your dreams and life adventures. When I meet first generation immigrants who have come to the United States to pursue their dreams and provide new opportunities for their children I am always filled with admiration on encouragement for the human spirit - being willing to take risks and go to great lengths to find something new. Thinking about the top athletes that Anjaney mentioned is that they have total belief in themselves and their capabilities. In the moments that matter most in the game they are able to make the critical plays and not succumb to fear. When we work hard a believe in ourselves we can achieve great things. Thank you Anjaney for these necessary reminders.
