Percussionist and educator Emma Terrell shares her journey from her problematic experience at Rice University to her Roy and Hazel Zeff Memorial Fellowship, where she studied emerging groups of women percussionists in traditionally male-dominated ensembles around the world. As an educator in Boston, she tells the day in the life of public school teaching artist, and rightfully calls out the system to change. In fact, Emma calls out for the systems within our entire country to change and shares how the systems have failed our citizens, particularly people of color and indigenous peoples. Recorded on May 21, Emma states that something in this country must change, it has to…and 4 days later George Floyd was murdered by Minneapolis police causing an awakening across the globe. Emma exemplifies the modern percussionist, the modern artist, vulnerability, courage and strength. One of our most powerful podcasts to date.
