⚠️ NEWEST EPISODE AVAILABLE NOW! ⚠️ Meet Jason Sole. He’s an award winning Criminal Justice Professor, Author of the Memoir titled “From Prison to PhD,” and a Restorative Justice Educator for over 12 years. He’s also the co-founder of the Humanize My Hoodie movement; a fashion company that aims to destigmatize black people in hoodies. THIS CONVERSATION CHANGED ME. Huge shoutout to my Partner in Crime, Kim Cronk, for sharing this experience with me as we are further educated about what Jason is doing in his social justice work. In this episode, the formerly incarcerated Abolitionist talks about facing hard truths and accountability for the harm he’s been caused as well as the harm he has caused others. He is now passionate about reducing harm and healing others. The concepts of Criminal, Restorative, and Transformative Justice are broken down and defined; examining aspects of how each scenario addresses harm. “No one solution is going to work for everybody” because justice is individually defined by each person. Empowering people to live their most authentic lives in safety, liberation, and prosperity is deeply embedded in creating a community that addresses harm reduction and prevents future harm from occurring. So what is Abolition? In a sense, it can be seen as the provision or reciprocal exchange of services for a mutual benefit, the creation of opportunities and access to resources, the genuine relationship and community-building, and the holistic mentality of reducing and preventing harm. Jason launched the Institute of Aspiring Abolitionists, a campaign that raised over $100,000 in less than 60 days. The Three Pillars are as follows: 1) Reimagining community safety as it relates to restorative and transformative justice. 2) Developing effective community safety models. 3) Learning through meaningful dialogue and the creation of neighborly networks. This conversation has truly challenged the way I’ve seen myself and the world around me. It has helped me deepen the work I’ve had to do within myself in order for me to become a more effective Social Activist and Social Worker.
