Our guest is a Denver stand-up comedian with a myriad of interests ranging from Martial Arts to mental health — please welcome to Top Shelf — John Henry!
You can follow John @John_Henry_Wilson on Instagram & be sure to check out his podcast ‘Mania & Melancholy’ if you enjoy him as much as us.
We talked about how John first became interested in martial arts, how he minored in Japanese while studying at CU Boulder, and how though he may look like it, it’s actually his dad who loves trains. Don’t believe me? Take it up with Amtrak! John shares about his own mental health journey and his frustration around the trend of young people seeking out a severe mental health diagnosis. We learn John is a descendant of college football royalty, Bobby Bowden. A strong breeze must’ve caught John’s apple when it fell off the tree, but who’s to say? Maybe he’s hiding some intense defensive schemes behind all that trauma.
John tells me that he learned how women work from his older sister and I offer John whatever help I can to successfully navigate dating apps to find “the one.” Sean shares a few “bedroom tips” to John (coachable) by putting them into extended metaphors about stand-up comedy.
Stick around to the end to hear the LEGENDARY story of John Henry’s — Dead Room — set, wherein he took the stage in front of a live audience, completely naked under his jiu jitsu Gi, with nothing but a rubber plunger & a bottle of Vaseline. I’ll let you put the rest together or just listen to hear John tell it best.
Thankful to have this hang with John Henry Wilson. Be kind to one another out there.
