"Liminal"

An enlightening discussion between Denise Levine, Drake Dyke, Kirstyn Everson Nair, Kevin Yamamoto, Tulip Joshi, Simon Maxwell Stewart, George Dallas and Vinod Nair.

Liminal  refers to a transitional or in-between state—neither here nor there, but rather on the verge of transformation. In academic and philosophical contexts, liminality is often used to describe periods of ambiguity, disorientation, or potential that occur during phases of transition. This concept was popularized in anthropology by Arnold van Gennep and later expanded by Victor Turner, especially in relation to rites of passage and societal change.

In contemporary discourse, liminal spaces—whether physical, emotional, or metaphorical—are seen as fertile ground for growth, creativity, and reinvention. These are moments or places where normal limits and structures are temporarily suspended, allowing individuals or systems to reconfigure.

Understanding liminality is valuable across disciplines—from leadership transitions and brand repositioning in the corporate world to personal development, cultural shifts, and innovation strategy. In essence, it highlights the power and vulnerability inherent in moments of transition.

Here’s a blog on the subject by our very own panelist Simon Maxwell Stewart: https://medium.com/@kidtronnix/liminal-dialectics-0ca3a4dc5dd1
