In 2011, Ellen Greenberg, a 27-year-old teacher from Philadelphia, was found dead in her apartment with 20 stab wounds.
Although initially ruled a homicide, her death was later controversially reclassified as a suicide—despite multiple wounds to her back and neck.
Her parents have been fighting for over a decade to get the cause of death changed and for a proper investigation.
Update: In early 2025, the original medical examiner formally recanted his suicide ruling, stating her death should be considered “something other than suicide.” The family also settled a civil suit with the city, which includes a new review of the case.
Meanwhile, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court is reviewing whether the family has legal standing to challenge the official cause of death.
The case remains inactive but not closed—with new pressure mounting for justice.
