Andro Umali -Two Wheeled Doctor

When most Filipinos think about doctors one of the first expectations is that they drive a nice car. The fact that hospitals put a premium on parking spaces for doctors is testament to this expectation and quite often the dream for many children and parents of being a doctor is attached to the dream of driving that fancy SUV.

Andro Umali is an emergency medicine doctor that bucks that trend. Since 2018 he has used his bicycle to go to and from the hospital he works in, one of the biggest hospitals in Metro Manila. A mere 5kms away from where he lived it was the perfect distance for bike commuting often taking him a mere 20-30 minutes to get to and from work -faster and more consistent than when he used to take his car through the traffic of the city. Today bike commuting covers 99% of all the trips he does in the city.

This was such an insightful conversation on the rise of bicycles as a major form of mobility during the pandemic and the challenges as well as small wins we have had on the road to making mobility more inclusive and equitable for all Filipinos. Realising that roads are not merely for private cars or motorised vehicles but for pedestrians, cyclists, and other forms of transport that move people and create better healthier communities.
