In this deeply moving episode, we sit down with RoxanneDavur, Master Trainer in Animal Welfare (Govt. of India) and the heart and soul behind Probably Paradise Shelter in Karjat. A woman of fierce compassion and unyielding determination, Roxanne shares the raw, unfiltered truth of what it takes to rescue and rehabilitate the forgotten animals—both small and large—who’ve been discarded, neglected, and left to suffer in silence.
For over two decades, Roxanne has dedicated her lifeto nurturing and protecting those without a voice—dogs, cats, cows, buffaloes, horses, donkeys, and more. Her shelter is home to over 460 animals, and every single one of them carries a story of pain, resilience, and hope. Whetherit's a paralyzed dog, a blind donkey, or a malnourished horse left to die, Roxanne and her team step in when no one else will.
In this heartfelt conversation, she speaks about:
🌿The lack of medical infrastructure for large animals and the urgent need to reform veterinary education, including how 60+ vets were trained just to handle horses.
🌿The overhaul needed in traditional animal care systems, with many rural beliefs resisting basic medical intervention for farm animals.
🌿The reality of shelters working on borrowed funds, training their own staff to assist in vet work due to the scarcity of reliable support.
🌿The mental and emotional toll of being a woman fighting for voiceless souls in a world where both animals and women are often considered commodities.
And yet, amidst the struggle, she shares tales of triumphand transformation—of severely injured animals who walk again, of neglected lives rediscovering love, and of community members gradually opening theirhearts to compassion.
But the road is long and funds are short.
The shelter runs primarily on Roxanne’s personalsavings and the unwavering support of a few loyal donors. She had been in the process of expanding this sacred haven by acquiring an additional 100 acres, in collaboration with the late Mr. Ratan Tata—a visionary who deeply believed in her cause. Sadly, with his passing, those plans are currently on hold. But the dream still lives on, and Roxanne can’tcarry it forward alone.
