With over 14 years of legal expertise and a Master of Laws from NLU Bhopal and Lewis & Clark's prestigious Center for Animal Law Studies, Varnika has dedicated her career to making animal cruelty not just visible, but actionable under the law.
In this episode, Varnika offers sharp insights into why The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960 (PCA) — one of India’s oldest animal protection laws — has sadly failed to meet the needs of animals in a rapidly modernizing world. While the Act was drafted in a different era, its lack of stringent penalties and weak enforcement leave countless animals vulnerable to suffering.
But the issue runs deeper than legislation.
Varnika highlights the real hurdle: public apathy and a severe lack of awareness. She believes that until every individual recognizes animals as sentient beings deserving compassion and legal protection, laws alone will never suffice.
Through her work, Varnika has shown how communities, corporates, and individuals alike can become champions for animal rights:
