In Matthew 16:18, Jesus makes one of the most hope-filled promises in all of Scripture: “I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it.” But what did He actually mean? In this final episode of my Matthew 16 series, we take a careful, biblical look at the foundation of the church, the difference between the visible and invisible church, and why understanding the meaning of Hades (not hell) changes everything. Is Jesus promising institutional perfection? Protection from doctrinal error? Freedom from demonic attack? Or is He pointing us to something even deeper—victory over death itself? Join me as we clear the fog and trace this promise from Isaiah and Sheol all the way to Christ’s resurrection and the believer’s final hope.
