In this episode of the "Fish Bag Podcast," JP Sanders reflects on the role of simple, playful activities like skateboarding and soccer in fostering community and connection. While sipping an espresso tonic, JP shares his thoughts on how these activities can thrive even in challenging times, such as a dystopian future.
JP begins by discussing skateboarding’s unique ability to bring people together. He recalls the origins of skateboarding with the Zephyr team (Z-Boys) from Dogtown, whose creativity and camaraderie transformed the sport. JP highlights the documentary Dogtown and Z-Boys as a source of inspiration, showcasing how even homemade skateboards built from roller skates sparked a movement. He emphasizes that skateboarding doesn’t require expensive equipment or facilities—just a bit of concrete, a hill, or even a cinder block can provide endless fun and create lasting bonds.
For JP, skateboarding is more than just a sport; it’s a way to connect with others in a childlike, joyful state. He believes that even in an Orwellian dystopian future, skateboarding will persist in underground spaces like parking lots and street corners. Its simplicity and accessibility make it a powerful tool for building community, especially because it’s often overlooked by those in power.
JP also reflects on soccer’s global appeal and durability. He shares memories of playing soccer as a child in Brazil and on the Tibetan Plateau, where minimal resources were needed to enjoy the game. Whether it’s kids kicking a makeshift ball in the dirt or organized teams on proper fields, soccer fosters teamwork, competition, and connection. JP notes that these shared experiences build community across cultures and generations.
Despite not being a fan of soccer himself, JP recognizes its value as a universal language that brings people together. Like skateboarding, soccer demonstrates how simple activities can create meaningful relationships and provide opportunities for joy, collaboration, and even conflict resolution.
JP explores how playful activities like skateboarding and soccer remain vital even in difficult circumstances. He argues that these seemingly trivial pursuits are essential for human connection and resilience. In his work with YWAM Barcelona, JP has seen firsthand how sports and creative outlets help people bond over shared passions. These activities may seem insignificant to those in power but are crucial for fostering community and sharing life with others.
JP ties these reflections back to his faith, emphasizing that sharing life through play creates opportunities to share Jesus with others. Whether it’s through skateboarding sessions or soccer games, these moments of connection allow people to experience God’s love in everyday interactions.
