Transitions are difficult to navigate at the best of times, but I think they can be particularly challenging for creative people. Creative practice is full of transitions such as from one project to the next, transitioning from form of creative work to another, and transitioning back to the studio after an exhibition. Here are some of my best tips for navigating transitions:
1. Be gentle with yourself
2. Give yourself time and space to emotionally process. Try to stay away from analyzing the situation. Until you've emotionally processed, you won't be able to find the answer anyway.
3. Ground yourself in your body with grounding techniques such as pressing your hand on the center of your chest and breathing deeply. Tune into your heart. This will take you out of anxiety.
4. Understand you will be tired. This is normal when you are doing deep processing.
5. Do comforting things such as taking naps, watching comfort movies and eating comforting foods.
6. Write down what you're thankful for every day.
7. Praise yourself for getting so good at tolerating transitions. The more you can tolerate "not knowing", the more you will be able to achieve in the future.
