There was a time, many years ago, when my wife and I took a trip to Hawaii. It was only for a week, but even then I started to get what is called "Rock Fever" where you realize you have nowhere to go because you're on an island in the middle of the ocean. In my case, I think it was mostly due to growing up and living most of my years in the Great Plains of the United States - very, very far from water.
Which is to say, I don't know much about water, sailing, shipping, etc. And yet, I wrote a whole chapter (thankfully, only one) that gets me well away from the common writing advice of "write what you know."
Ah, well.
It does put our adventurers in a great deal of peril, which is a key ingredient to any good adventure tale. So all in all, it's a win. Right?
