Ex-pickpocket "Monterey" Jack Danvers has been hired by his old partner, Mack Sutherland, to help Mrs. Finch and her daughter Lucy recover a gold deed in the Yukon. The adventure has involved bandits, pirates, a mysterious pearl-like stone, and a just-in-time encounter with a native tribe. It is now morning, and our merry band of adventurers is in the sparse home of a strange hermit named Pete.
