Ex-pickpocket "Monterey" Jack Danvers has been hired by his old partner, Mack Sutherland, to help Mrs. Finch and her daughter Lucy recover a gold deed in the Yukon. The adventure has involved bandits, a shipwreck, a mysterious pearl-like stone, a dangerous walk through a devious forest... and now Monterey must walk the secret passage alone to see if he can find the missing gold claim document.
But now there is an eerie stillness in the Brown house because the owner hasn't returned from his reign of terror. Is it safe for Monterey and his friends to come out of hiding? Is this a trap set up by Cornelius Brown? Is the foe vanquished, or are we only moments from the fight to end all fights?
