In this episode of Leadership Lenses, we explore one of the most complex and defining relationships in Jewish day school leadership, the dynamic between a school head and their board. Too often, leaders get stuck in cycles of avoidance, frustration, or purely transactional exchanges with their boards, treating them as obstacles rather than as potential partners. Drawing on years of experience, we consider how leaders can move beyond denial, bargaining, or resignation toward a place of genuine acceptance and integration. This shift reframes the board not as an adversary or necessary burden, but as a powerful asset, a group entrusted with holding the school in trust for the community and providing perspectives leaders themselves cannot always see. By examining our own mindset, we can uncover where we stand in our approach to board relationships and begin charting a path toward trust, collaboration, and shared vision.
