In this episode, we turn our attention to the captivating work of Mark Winter, a celebrated contemporary metal sculptor whose imaginative creations are a highlight of the Lincoln, Nebraska art scene. Based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Mark Winter is a master of found object art, a fascinating genre where discarded materials are transformed into extraordinary sculptures. His journey as an artist began in an unlikely place: an auto body shop. After studying at Wyoming Tech, Winter honed his skills in welding, metalwork, and painting, which later became the foundation of his artistic practice. Today, from his studio in Menomonee Falls, he breathes new life into 100% recycled scrap metal, turning everything from tractor parts to old tools into whimsical, narrative-driven figures. Currently on display at Metro Gallery Nebraska is Winter’s remarkable sculpture, “King of Fools.” Standing 40 inches tall, this piece perfectly embodies the artist's unique style. The sculpture is an assemblage of found industrial objects, featuring a brightly painted body with a natural rust patina, all resting on a sturdy steel plate base. The “King of Fools” has a playful, jester-like personality that is both humorous and thought-provoking, inviting viewers to appreciate the beauty and potential in repurposed materials. Winter’s work follows in the tradition of assemblage art, which was pioneered by artists like Pablo Picasso and Marcel Duchamp , and is currently the primary focus of artist Tom Rickers. By elevating everyday objects to the status of fine art, these artists challenged conventional definitions of creativity. Mark Winter continues this legacy, creating sculptures that are not only visually stunning but also rich with history and character. His work has been featured in prestigious art fairs across the United States, from the Cherry Creek Arts Festival in Denver to CONTEXT Art Miami, solidifying his reputation as a significant voice in American contemporary sculpture. We invite you to visit Metro Gallery Nebraska in Lincoln to experience the enchanting world of Mark Winter and see the “King of Fools” in person. It is an opportunity to witness how this talented artist transforms the forgotten fragments of our industrial past into compelling works of art that are full of life and personality.
