Chapter 45 Summary
Charley sits outside a coffee shop and vents her frustration to Mark Peltier over the ongoing CID investigation into his supposed abduction. Despite her efforts to shut it down, the CID insists on receiving a notarized statement proving Mark was not abducted. Charley, now furious at being made to look incompetent, demands that Mark take responsibility. Mark, in turn, calls Weaver and insists that he prepare the required documentation. Weaver resists, but Mark pressures him by invoking their agreement and the looming threat of CID involvement. Eventually, Weaver grudgingly agrees to draft the document for Mark’s review and signature.
Meanwhile, Robert Jackson prepares nervously for his coffee date with Kathy. He meets her at the deli and walks with her to a nearby coffee shop. Their conversation reveals more about Kathy’s work history and Robert’s unusual mind—he confesses to being a savant with an extraordinary memory, describing it as both a gift and a burden. Despite Jackson forgetting his wallet, Kathy reassures him that she’ll see him again, and their budding connection deepens. As Kathy returns to work, Robert heads upstairs to repay her, relieved and uplifted by how the evening went.
