What does an obscure Old Testament ritual with a red heifer and ashes have to do with the gospel of Jesus Christ? In this sermon from Numbers 19, Dr. Jason Pickard shows how the strange details of Israel’s cleansing laws point us to the greater cleansing found in Christ. Just as water and blood washed God’s people so they could enter His presence, so Jesus—the perfectly clean One—became unclean so that we might be washed, forgiven, and brought near to God. Baptism points us to this reality, reminding us that salvation is not something we earn but a gift of God’s grace. This baptism is not only a one-time sign but a means of grace we are called to “remember and improve,” strengthening faith and assurance.
