Chapter 9 Summary: “Theory”
On the drive back to Forks, Edward explains he can find Bella by her scent and that he's the only one in his family who can read minds—though only within a few miles.
Bella tells him about Jacob’s vampire legend and her own internet research. She says she knows he’s dangerous but doesn’t care. Edward confirms his family only drinks animal blood, though it's not ideal. Bella notes his golden eyes mean he recently fed; he’s amused by her observation.
He confesses he worried about her while away and noticed her scrapes from La Push. When she asks why he missed school, he says he can’t appear in sunlight—without elaborating. Bella admits she misses him when he’s gone. He warns it’s dangerous for her to care about him.
At her house, Bella makes him promise to come to school, and in return, Edward makes her promise not to go into the woods alone—because he’s not the only danger out there.
