Malachi 4:1–6. The advent of Jesus Christ, the Sun of righteousness, would be preceded by the coming of Elijah, a representative of the prophets. This confused the Jews of the first century, who looked for a literal return of Elijah the Tishbite, but Elijah came figuratively in the ministry of John the Baptist.
