Description

Chapter 22 opens with Hashem’s emotional command:

"Take your son, your favored one, whom you love, Isaac, and go to (lech lecha) the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the heights that I will point out to you." (Bereishit 22:2)

The phrase "Lech Lecha" immediately recalls the beginning of Abraham’s journey in Chapter 12:

"Go forth: 1) leave your land, 2) leave your birthplace, 3) leave your father’s house, 4) go to the land that I will show you." (Bereishit 12:1)

Just as that command was split into four goals, so too here the command to take Isaac is split into four parts:

1. Take your son

2. Your favored one

3. Whom you love

4. Isaac

Over the past ten chapters, Abraham has struggled to fulfill the four-part mission. Now, in Chapter 22, all four goals are embodied in one person—his son Isaac.

Repetition of “Hineni” – “Here I am”

We see this phrase three times in Chapter 22:

1. Verse 1

"Some time afterward, Elokim put Abraham to the test, saying to him, ‘Abraham.’ He answered, ‘Here I am.’"

2. Verse 7

"Then Isaac said to his father Abraham, ‘Father!’ and he answered, ‘Here I am, my son.’"

3. Verse 11

"Then the messenger of Hashem called to him from heaven: ‘Abraham! Abraham!’ And he answered, ‘Here I am.’"

In each case, Abraham is emotionally present, affirming his readiness to fulfill his destiny.

The Fourth “Hineni”?

It’s not spoken by Abraham—but it’s revealed in verse 14:

"And Abraham named that place ‘Hashem Yeraeh,’ to say that today on the mountain Hashem was seen (yeraeh/יֵרָאֶֽה)." (Bereishit 22:14)

This is the fourth moment of presence—not Abraham saying “Hineni,” but Abraham recognizing Hashem’s presence. The word "Yeraeh" shares the same root as "Areka" (I will show you) from Chapter 12:

"To the land that I will show you." (Bereishit 12:1)

Abraham has finally arrived at the place Hashem intended to show him. He has left everything behind and fully committed to a life with Hashem.

The Ultimate Blessing

Following this, Hashem gives Abraham the ultimate promise:

"I will bestow My blessing upon you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars of heaven and the sands on the seashore; and your descendants shall seize the gates of their foes." (Bereishit 22:17)

This echoes the original promise from Chapter 12:

"I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great." (Bereishit 12:2)

Abraham’s journey is complete.
