Description

Rob Baker is a British author and ethnomusicologist, who spent nine years living in Africa. His work had taken him to Benin, Cote d'Ivoire, Mali, Togo, Nigeria, Gambia, Kenya and Burundi.

Rob currently lives back in the UK, where he teaches music, writes books and plays jazz piano.

I first encountered Rob in Bamako. I had never met an Ethnomusicologist before. But after a quick explanation of what it is he does exactly, I commented,  "I can see the day we will have need of your expertise.

And Sure enough, Eight years later we did. We called Rob to return to Mali and help us record and capture some rare Music genres of the Ganadougou people. It was a gift to watch him peal back the layers of their music history and culture and capture some very unique stroies and music on mp3. We were able to record 16 songs.

Rod also stayed with us as he passed through our region, for various music sessions all over Mali. It has been a pleasure and Joy to call him a friend.
