Who was Esav really? The Chumash paints a picture that shifts from scene to scene, and Rashi adds even more complexity. At times, he rejects everything connected to Avraham. At other moment,s he seems to want a place within that legacy, or at least within Yitzchak’s approval. This tension runs through his entire life, and the Torah gives us several snapshots that are easy to read in isolation but difficult to assemble into a single character.
In this episode, I look closely at the episodes that define Esav’s inner struggles. The sale of the bechorah. His choice of wives. His attempt to win his parents’ favor. And finally, his decision to leave the land of Canaan entirely. Each of these moments feels contradictory until you examine them through the lens of Rashi, Midrash, and the psukim together.
Why did Esav waver between wanting to return and giving up completely? What was he really hoping to achieve by marrying Machalat? And why did he repeatedly fall into despair whenever a great tzadik in his life passed away?
The deeper pattern behind these episodes reveals a person caught between attraction and rejection, between jealousy and longing, and between the pull of teshuvah and the pull of resentment. It is a story that becomes clearer only when all the sources are placed side by side.
