Why They The Elders Replaced?

In the second half of this story I turn to one of the most dramatic and least understood transitions in the Torah. The original zekeinim, the elders who stood at the burning bush and later climbed Har Sinai, eventually disappear completely. In their place, an entirely new group of leaders rises from within the nation. Why did this happen? What went wrong?

The answer begins with a remarkable vision at Sinai. Rashi describes the elders eating and drinking while gazing at the Shechinah, an act so inappropriate that their death was delayed only to preserve the joy of Matan Torah. At first this seems like a separate incident, unrelated to what happened in Egypt. But when you look at the full arc of their story a deeper thread emerges.

Their behavior in Egypt, their attitude at Sinai, and the nation’s later collapse at Taveirah are all connected. Through the lens of Rashi and the surrounding Midrash I trace how the elders’ approach to leadership influenced the people, shaping their relationship to mitzvot and to God Himself. Only then does it become clear why the shotrim, the officers who protected the people rather than themselves, were chosen to replace them.

This episode reveals how Chazal understood true leadership, why it requires sacrifice, and how a flawed model of leadership can ripple outward and distort an entire nation’s view of Torah.

World of Medrash is a podcast where I explore the hidden layers of Rashi and Chazal to uncover the deeper story beneath the text. Each episode presents a fresh and thoughtful perspective on familiar psukim.
