Description

There is a name that appears in the Torah only a handful of times, yet each appearance hints that he was one of the greatest leaders in our history. His name is Chur. We see him standing with Moshe and Aharon during the war with Amalek. We see him appointed again at Har Sinai as a judge for the nation. His grandson Betzalel becomes the architect of the Mishkan. With credentials like these, why does Chur’s story suddenly stop? What happened to him?

In this episode I explore the mystery of Chur’s disappearance. The psukim provide very little information, but the Midrash fills in a dramatic and tragic moment that took place during cheit haegel. When Bnei Yisrael demanded a god to replace Moshe, they went first to Chur. He refused to participate. What happened next is almost too shocking to imagine, and it reshapes the way we understand the depth of the nation’s fall in that moment.

More importantly, I look at what Chur’s absence means for Bnei Yisrael. What does it mean for a nation to lose a leader who could have shaped its character? What potential was taken from us? And how does Betzalel’s role in building the Mishkan reflect the quiet legacy Chur left behind?

World of Medrash is where I explore the hidden stories behind Rashi and the Midrash and uncover the deeper ideas that shape the narrative of the Chumash.
