In this continuation of his story, Keith Robinette shares his transformative journey of relocation to Asheville, North Carolina. What began as a career move turned into a profound exploration of identity, community, and the acceptance of one’s true self.

The Relocation Decision

Keith never imagined he would end up in Asheville. His journey began after his children graduated, allowing him the freedom to explore new opportunities. He recalls, "I told Logan, I didn't want to leave far away while they're growing up... So when they graduated... it was very interesting." This pivotal moment led him to Athens, Georgia, where he initially struggled to find a sense of belonging. After a brief stint there, an opportunity arose in Asheville, and Keith jumped at the chance, stating, "Asheville, that will be a lot closer."

Embracing Asheville's Unique Culture

Upon moving to Asheville, Keith immediately felt a vibrant energy in the city. He recalls a conversation with a local who assured him, "If you think you're weird and you're different, there's somebody behind you that's even weirder or looks even more different." This acceptance sparked a sense of belonging that Keith hadn’t experienced before. He describes Asheville as a place where individuality is celebrated, noting, "I started to see... different looks and colored hair, and nobody seemed to treat them any differently."

Building a Community

Keith's quest for connection led him to O'Henry's, a local bar where he sought to find friends within the LGBTQ+ community. His efforts paid off when he attended an event called Lesbians in the Mountains, marking a significant moment in his social life. "This first time I'd been into a group of all of that... I was like, oh my gosh, this is so much fun," he shares. Through these experiences, he began to form a chosen family that provided the support he had longed for.

Personal Growth and Identity

The move to Asheville was not just a change of scenery; it became a catalyst for Keith's personal growth. He reflects on how this journey helped him uncover his authentic self. "Being here started the whole journey for me to find myself," he states. This journey was further influenced by his daughter's marriage, prompting Keith to reassess his identity beyond being a father. He candidly shares a moment of vulnerability, expressing, "I found myself standing at a bridge... I don't know what to do with my life anymore."

Life-Changing Relationships

Keith's friendships, particularly with his chosen family, played a crucial role in his transformation. He recounts the experience of celebrating his daughter’s wedding, where his community gathered to support him. The joy of this occasion was heightened by the acceptance shown by his family, particularly his father, who invited Keith's partner, Logan, to family gatherings. This acceptance marked a turning point in their relationship, illustrating the positive impact of connection and understanding.
