Description

Bad things happen to good people, and they happen to “bad” people. They happen to everyone. When it feels like they are piling up on and around us, we can begin to “catastrophize” even the smallest of things. A headache becomes a brain tumor and our minds are off to the races. This week we talk strategies to ground our minds when we start feeling out of control.

This Week’s Listener Question:

One of my good friends died a few years ago from cancer. My husband just had a prostate cancer scare. Any time my body feels weird, I’m afraid it’s cancer. Am I paranoid? What’s wrong with me?

Small Group Questions:

To build connection with a friend or in your small group, ask each other these questions.

1.  When do you find yourself catastrophizing, turning headaches into brain tumors?

2.  Have you ever found yourself becoming addicted to fear, bad news, or paranoia?

3.  When we feel out of control, we are often tempted to engage in behaviors that Christine listed as self-harm: disordered eating, cutting, avoidance, isolation, or rumination. What strategies do you use to attempt to control things outside your control?

4.  In what ways can you shift your thoughts and strategies to help you ground yourself in the present movement when you feel out of control? What’s useful action mentioned in the podcast that you’re willing to try this week?
