What does real repentance actually look like when it costs something?

In today’s episode of Five Minute Bible, we read Genesis 43–45, the emotional and theological center of the Joseph story.

The famine deepens. The pressure increases. And Joseph’s brothers are forced back into a situation that mirrors their greatest sin. The same family. The same favoritism. The same threat of losing a favored son.

But this time, something is different.

Joseph does not rush reconciliation. He tests hearts before revealing himself. Because forgiveness without truth heals nothing—and repentance that costs nothing proves nothing.

When the moment finally comes, Judah steps forward. The man who once sold his brother now offers himself in another brother’s place. Not excuses. Not regret. Substitution.

And then Joseph reveals who he is.

Not with vengeance—but with tears.
Not by denying their sin—but by placing it inside God’s sovereignty.
What they meant for evil, God meant for good.

As you read today, consider this guiding question:
What does true repentance look like—and why does it always demand a price?

Genesis 43–45 shows us that God does not erase the past. He redeems people through it. And when reconciliation finally comes, it comes fully, honestly, and graciously.

Read your Bible carefully, devotionally, and joyfully—and join us tomorrow as forgiveness begins shaping an entirely new future for this family.
