What do you do when obedience leads you somewhere that feels like retreat?
In today’s episode of Five Minute Bible, we read Genesis 46–47, where Jacob and his family leave the land of promise and descend into Egypt—by God’s command.
This move feels dangerous. Egypt represents security, power, and provision, but also temptation and future bondage. And yet God speaks clearly: Do not be afraid to go down. The covenant is not abandoned. It is on the move.
Jacob is reunited with Joseph in one of the most tender scenes in Genesis. The family is settled in Goshen—sustained, but not absorbed. Protected, but not home.
Meanwhile, Joseph governs wisely through famine, preserving life across nations. And then something astonishing happens: the aged shepherd Jacob blesses Pharaoh, the most powerful ruler on earth. The promise-holder blesses the empire—not the other way around.
As you read today, consider this guiding question:
How does God keep His promises when faith leads us into unfamiliar and uncomfortable places?
Genesis 46–47 teaches us that God often preserves His people through displacement. He provides safety without permanence, stability without finality. Transitional seasons are not mistakes—they are instruments in God’s hands.
God’s plan is not retreating. It is advancing quietly.
Read your Bible carefully, devotionally, and joyfully—and join us tomorrow as Egypt’s role in the story begins to darken, setting the stage for generations of tension yet to come.
