In Episode 5, The Black Fatigue, I’m joined by Jason/The Botanical Moonshiner for a candid conversation about film, Blackness, and religion.
Using Lent as our starting point, I share why I’ve felt disconnected from my faith this year, a feeling that began after watching Sinners. We explore how the film depicts Christianity, colonialism, hoodoo, and the tension between sacred and secular life, alongside the question of whether critical thinking and social science create friction with faith.
We also discuss the awards discourse surrounding Sinners, the wider cultural conversation, and the BAFTA incident involving racial harm and disability, unpacking how accountability, racism, and ableism can exist in the same moment.
