This episode dives deeper into the thyroid. Hashimoto's thyroiditis is an autoimmune thyroid disease where the body sees the thyroid as an invader and attacks it. Hashimoto's affects about 5% of the population, although we are finding that it is often miss-diagnosed or under-diagnosed. It is 7 times more prevalent in women than in men. The autoimmune thyroid diseases are especially concerning because they have a strong genetic link and are associated with other autoimmune disorders such as type 1 Diabetes, Rheumatoid Arthritis, lupus and celiac disease. Our diet plays a key role in optimizing thyroid function. Listen in as Amanda shares some in depth information and Lindsey shares her personal story with Hashimoto's and thyroid cancer from a Dietitian perspective.
