Welcome to the first NOPE Episode of Thunder Thighs & Lightning. These periodic episodes will feature womxn throughout history who have decided they were fed up with the patriarchy and done with being oppressed by societal rules, so they just said, "Nope." We will try to teach you a little bit about their story before introducing their involvement in activism, feminism, protest, education, reform, freedom, and many other empowerment efforts. While we try to be exhaustive and include our sources, please note that we simply cannot tell you their whole stories, so we always recommend doing some more digging on your own.
Our first featured woman is Mary Ann Hall, an entrepreneur and madam from the Civil War era, who simply saw an opportunity to build her empire on something that almost all people want: sex. Not much was known about her until the ruins of her well-appointed brothel were unearthed on the National Mall while breaking ground for a museum in the 1990s. Pour yourself a fine glass of sparkling and join us as Kat weaves the tale of this legend. Cheers!
