Stop Using the Bible as a Pillow – Why Most Christians Never Actually Read God's Word

You own a Bible. Maybe several. It's on your nightstand, your bookshelf, your phone. You've highlighted verses, quoted them in prayers, even posted them on Instagram.

But when's the last time you actually read it?

Not a devotional. Not a verse-of-the-day app. Not a sermon illustration.

When's the last time you sat down and read the actual Word of God?

If you're like most Christians, the honest answer is: rarely. Maybe never consistently.

And here's the brutal truth: You can't follow a Jesus you don't know. And you can't know a Jesus whose words you don't read.

The Bible-as-Decoration Problem

We treat the Bible like spiritual decoration. We keep it close because it makes us feel Christian. We place it on our nightstands like a talisman—as if physical proximity to Scripture transfers spiritual power.

But the Bible isn't a pillow. It's a sword. And swords are meant to be wielded, not displayed.

Hebrews 4:12: "The word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart."

Living. Active. Sharp. Piercing.

That's not pillow language. That's weapon language.

And most Christians have never picked it up.

Why Christians Don't Read the Bible

Let's be honest:

• We're too busy. We have time for Netflix, social media, sports—but somehow never time for God's Word.

• We don't understand it. So we rely on pastors and commentaries instead of wrestling with it ourselves.

• We're afraid of what it will demand. If we read it, we'll have to obey it. And obedience is costly.

• We think we already know it. We've heard the stories, memorized verses, sat through sermons. But here's the reality: You don't know the Bible. You know about the Bible.

And there's a massive difference.

What Happens When You Actually Read It

In December 2024, the Holy Spirit whispered: "Read your Bible."

Not "read a devotional." Not "listen to a sermon." "Read your Bible."

So I did. Genesis. Exodus. Leviticus. The history books, poetry, prophets, Gospels, Epistles, Revelation.

And as I read, the Holy Spirit told me to mark things. Highlight words. Underline phrases. Connect themes.

And the Bible came alive.

Verses I'd read a hundred times suddenly clicked. Passages I didn't understand started connecting across books and testaments. Layer after layer, revelation stacking on revelation.

The Bible isn't just a book. It's a living conversation with God.

The Exponential Growth Principle

Matthew 13:12: "To the one who has, more will be given, and he will have an abundance."

The more you steward what God reveals, the more He gives you. It's exponential.

When you read your Bible and obey what you see, God shows you more. And then more. And then more.

But if you ignore it? The clarity fades. The conviction dulls. And eventually, you lose even what you thought you had.

The Challenge

So here's the question: Are you actually reading your Bible?

Not skimming. Not "doing a devotional." Not listening to someone else explain it.

Are you sitting down, opening God's Word, and letting Him speak to you directly?

If not, why?

Too busy? Then you've made something else your god.

Too confused? Then ask the Holy Spirit to teach you. He will.

Too afraid? Then you're choosing comfort over obedience. And that's called cowardice, not faith.

Stop Using the Bible as a Pillow

The Word of God isn't meant to make you comfortable. It's meant to make you alive.

It's not decoration. It's not inspiration. It's not a good-luck charm.

It's the living, active, authoritative Word of the God who created you, saved you, and is calling you into His Kingdom.

So stop treating it like a pillow.

Pick up the sword.

Read. Obey. Be transformed.
