My Sister My Bride

One may wonder why in the episode of Avram’s and Sarai’s conversation at the border of Mitzrayim. How does Avram permit himself to abandon Sarai to the mercy of the depraved Egyptians?

How can he worry about saving his own skin, while doing nothing about saving his wife from being abducted and violated? Why is the path to salvation by claiming that she is Avram’s sister? Better yet it would have been for them to deny any relationship whatsoever! After all, a brother would still look after his sister and try to save her from harm, and they might choose to do away with him out of an abundance of caution.

Why does Avram specifically ask Sarai to say that he is her brother, instead of saying forthrightly on his own that she is his sister?

We revisit these ideas understanding them as an allegory of the relationship between man and G-d.
